monkeying around // photography project made with Ilona Barszcz
The photography was created in places imitating nature, among artificial rocks and real plants. These are specially prepared spaces to „expose” animals, in an artificially created zoo environment. We put ourselves in the place of the exotic and endangered species in view in two situations, one somewhat playful and the other more dramatic. The title „monkeying around” refers, on the one hand, to the game of mimicry, and on the other, to the primates from which we are separated by a thin (like zoo glass) boundary. The question is who is the watched and who is the one watching; who is looking at us and what is seen, what is happening on both sides of the glass, what is visible and what is not externalized, but deeply experienced? The grotesque swapping of roles, can prompt reflection on the position of man in relation to nature, now and in a hypothetical future.
